About the Book:

Early in the history of English, the words "grammar" and "glamour" meant the same thing: the power to charm. Roy Peter Clark, author of Writing Tools, aims to put the glamour back in grammar with this fun, engaging alternative to stuffy instructionals. In this practical guide, readers will learn everything from the different parts of speech to why effective writers prefer concrete nouns and active verbs. THE GLAMOUR OF GRAMMAR gives readers all the tools they need to"live inside the language"--to take advantage of grammar to perfect their use of English, to instill meaning, and to charm through their writing. With this indispensable book, readers will come to see just how glamorous grammar can be.

Review:

I will start by saying that English was never my favorite subject. It was my least favorite subject in elementary school, and I still feel the same way 12 years later as a college student. For some reason, however, I always received "A's" from all of my English classes. Don't get me wrong, poor grammar and bad spelling is one of my pet peeves, but I do not care for English as a subject.

When I learned of the opportunity to review The Glamour of Grammar, I became intrigued. What could possibly be glamorous about grammar? I would soon discover that there is in fact a connection between glamour and grammar.

This book made brushing up on English fun and interesting. Why couldn't my teachers do that?! Roy Peter Clark does an excellent job making the connection between glamour and grammar, and making the learning experience enjoyable.

I was scared at first when I flipped through the book and saw 50 chapters, but they were very easy to read, and I was able to complete it in no time! I especially enjoyed the Keepsakes at the end of each chapter that highlight the most important points made in the chapter. They are easy to access should you need to make a quick reference to a key point.

The Glamour of Grammar is perfect for high school and college students, "English nerds" and those looking to "master grammar to perfect your use of English".

I would like this book because I've always been a stickler for proper grammar, like when people say they are "good" in answer to how are you, instead of "well"..!
